Gen. Society seeks info on country schools

The Greene County Genealogical Society is asking for help in completing information about country schools in the county circa 1892-1920.

At that time, every section in every township had its own school. The schools were numbered or referred to by a family name. The society was gifted with a large collection of clippings naming schools, but in compiling and organizing the clippings, there are 13 schools for which society members don’t know a location.

The list includes Baker, Calder, Kimmey, Wood, Jemison (unsure of spelling), Peter Kane, Dreher, Whitehall, Gordon, Duff, Hicks, Moss and Bryant.

“This might be a fun conversation starter as families gather for the holidays,” Genealogical Society president Arlene Johnson said. “We’d just like to complete our information.”

Persons with the location of any of these schools can email araejohnson@netins.net, call Johnson at 515-386-5431, or mail it to the Genealogical Society at PO Box 133, Jefferson, IA 50129.
