Chamber and Jefferson Matters usher in 2016 Christmas season

Greene County Chamber invites area residents to take part in the 2016 holiday season showcasing the uniqueness that our communities have to offer. Many special activities are planned.

Jefferson Matters: Main Street kicks off the season with the Community Christmas Tree Lighting Thursday, Dec. 1, at 5:30 pm inside the Thomas Jefferson Gardens. Santa will light the tree and then he will be at the top of the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower until 7:30 pm to hear the Christmas wishes of good boys and girls of every age. The first 200 persons through the gates of Thomas Jefferson Gardens will receive a coupon for a free decorated Christmas cookie from Homestead Coffee & Bakery. Group caroling led by the Greene County Singers and dancing by the Sugar Plum Fairies will ward off the cold.

The celebration continues with the festive “sounds of the season” beginning with the Greene County Singers in a holiday concert with the Town & Country Band, Sunday, Dec. 4, at 2 pm at the Paton-Churdan School Auditorium. There is no admission charge, but a free will donation will be accepted.

The “sounds of the season” continue as St. Patrick Catholic oratory is the site at 4 pm of a Christmas Cantata, – “A Morning Star” featuring “All Strings Attached” chorus/orchestra from Carroll. St Patrick is located four miles west of Churdan on County Road E-19 and then one-half mile north on E Ave.

The Nativity Festival, a fundraiser for the Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity, will be Sunday, Dec. 11 at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson. Nativity sets will be on display beginning at 3 pm. Gathering music will start in the church sanctuary at 3:30 and a concert featuring a variety of music and musicians will begin at 4. A soup supper follows at 5:15, and a pie auction with pies made by some of the best pie bakers in the county will begin at 5:35.

All area children are invited to visit Santa and Mrs. Claus at their Jefferson headquarters in the Masonic Lodge on the west side of the courthouse square in Jefferson. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be in their headquarters on Saturday, Dec. 3, and Saturday, Dec. 17, from 10 am to 12 pm. Mrs. Claus wishes to remind children to bring their Christmas wish list to share with Santa and receive a special treat.
