Tree Tracings

Tree Tracings~by Valerie Ogren for the Greene  County Genealogical Society

Meeting notice – The Greene County Genealogical Society will meet Saturday, Aug. 6, at 10 am in the basement meeting room of the Jefferson public library.  Sharlene Handley will have the program.  She is one of several in our group who have delved into the DNA research program.  Guests are always welcome. The meeting room is handicapped accessible.

We had such a good crowd last month that someone mentioned maybe we should “meet and eat” at every meeting if attendance is better.  Thanks to all who contributed to the ARC.

Vertical files – Gems in the IGS library include the vertical files. These files can contain pension documents and land documents in addition to many others. Check under your surname to see if there might be any important documentation for your family. We might add that the Jefferson public library also has vertical files. Does yours? If there is some project you are researching, ask you librarians.

Preserve Iowa Summit – This 2016 premier statewide annual conference is for professionals and volunteers involved in historic preservation in Iowa. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act. The Summit, Sept. 15-17, will feature more than 35 educational sessions held in or near downtown Davenport.  For registration information, go to https://www.cityofdavenportiowa.com/egov/apps/payment/center.egov?view=form;page=1;id=659

Reference library – The reference library is open again regular hours in the basement of the Jefferson public library:  Saturday 9 am to noon and Wednesday from 1 to 4 pm.  Here are a few surnames of family histories which have been donated to our shelves: Adams, Adkins, Allen, Anderson, Athey, Baggs, Bennett, Black, Booth, Buswell, Buchmiller, Burk – all with Greene County connections.
