County spelling champs told

Kevin Orfield, scholar extraordinaire of the Jefferson-Scranton class of 2006, added another trophy to his large collection of Greene County spelling bee trophies.

Orfield won the adult division of the spelling bee, hosted by the Greene County Historical Society as part of the Bell Tower Festival Saturday afternoon at the Greene County Community Center. Amy McGinn placed second.

Sam Derry won in the grades 1-2 division with Lucy Vander Linden second. Henry McGinn was third.

Gavin Vander Linden was the only speller in the grades 3-4 division. He spelled two words correctly to earn his first place trophy, and then correctly spelled “anthropomorphic” for good measure.

There were no spellers in the grades 5-8 division.

Shirley Stapleton was judge and Andrew McGinn pronounced the words. The old-fashioned spelling bee was organized by Marilynn Hoskinson.
