The Greene County Ram softball season kicked off Monday, May 23, in Jefferson with a 5-4 victory over PCM (Monroe). It was a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference game.

Junior Hannah Promes was the winning pitcher. She also slammed a three-run home run to left center in the fourth inning to put the Rams up 5-1. PCM scored three times in the seventh to make it a one run game.

Promes allowed nine hits, four in the final frame, while walking two and striking out two. All four PCM runs were earned.

The Rams had five hits with freshman Jenna Beyers collecting two doubles, while seniors Carleigh Paup and Sydney Koch each added a single. The Rams made some big defensive plays for head coach Tom Kennedy, whose team had seven new starters from a season ago. Each team committed one error.

The following evening Greene County lost at home to Gilbert 13-10. Both teams are 1-1 overall and 1-1 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play.

The Rams led 5-0 after three innings, but the Tigers scored 13 straight runs before a five-run sixth closed the gap to three runs. Greene County went down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

The Tigers had 15 hits, 14 of them off losing pitcher Promes. Samantha Hardaway pitched the final 1-2/3 innings. The Rams had three errors to go with other plays that weren’t errors, but weren’t executed properly.

Gilbert committed four errors, but none after the third inning. The Tigers put together good offensive and defensive efforts in the last four innings.

Jenna Beyers had a three-run triple for the only extra-base hit for the Rams. The other seven hits were singles with two apiece from Promes and Faith Davis. Megan Durbin had a run-scoring single, while Megan Carey and Laurin Lyons each had base hits.

The Rams’ only two seniors, Sydney Koch and Carleigh Paup, missed Tuesday’s game due to the Paton-Churdan senior class trip.
