Scranton water customers could notice a slight increase in the water rates, beginning in July. The Scranton city council approved the first reading of an ordinance that calls for a one percent increase in water rates as of July 1 and a one percent increase on each subsequent July 1.

The first reading of the ordinance was approved at the May 10 meeting. The second reading is slated for the June 14 meeting of the council.

A public hearing was held on the amendment of the 2015/16 budget. No comments were received and the amendment was approved.

During open forum, Stacy MacDonald informed the council of a drainage issue within Drainage District 38 that runs through town. He believes a drainage tile is broken and needs to be repaired. The council will take steps to repair the tile.

Approval was given to brick up three small and one large window at the Community Center at a cost of $3,131 by C & D Masonry. A bid of $940 for 45 tons of natural rock for the alleys, including spreading, was approved from Arcadia Limestone.

Appointments were made to the planning and zoning commission. Selected were Jan Christian, Richard Fey, Larry Erikson, Kathy Jarrell and Brian Hinners.

Items discussed but no action taken included water seepage at city hall, a Betterment Committee organization proposal, table and chair rental form, abandoned properties, nuisances, tax sales, animal control, wage reviews and a request from Dustin Gustoff to have a dog kennel on his property.
