Former Scranton teacher killed in bike/truck crash

A tragic accident has claimed the life of a life-long teacher, Joleen Stork of Glidden. The 60-year-old died Friday evening near her home north of Glidden.

The Iowa State Patrol investigated the collision that occurred at 6:42 pm on April 22 on Carroll County Road E-26, east of Sycamore. Stork was westbound riding a Mongoose mountain bicycle. A 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by Walter James Wenck, 83, of Carroll was also westbound.

Wenck did not see Stork or the bicycle, hitting her from behind. The force of the impact threw her into the north ditch. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Carroll County Coroner.

Stork was a life-long teacher. Her career spanned 35 years, teaching at YJB (two years), Scranton (eight years) and 25 years at Carroll. She was retired but still worked as a substitute teacher and taught CCD to students at St Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden.

Funeral services were held Tuesday. She is survived by her husband, Lynn of Glidden; children, Blake of Dubuque, Darrin of Grand Forks, ND, and Heidi (Ethan) Lensch of Des Moines; parents, Don and Lu Wiederin of Scranton; three sisters, JoAnn and Brian Johnson of Glidden, Cindy and Randy Klink of Vail, and Jackie and Rick Sward of Monument, CO; other relatives and many friends. ~The Scranton Journal
