Organization meeting for ’16 farmers market next Tuesday

Farmers MarketThe Greene County farmers market and local food producers will have a meeting Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 5:30 pm at the Jefferson public library.

All residents in Greene County and surrounding counties who produce foods for sale direct to the customer or for wholesale are encouraged to attend. Anyone who is interested in a local foods business but not yet selling is also invited to join the group.

Local foods are a fast-growing segment of food sales. Customers are looking for meats, eggs, vegetables, fruits, baked goods, and value-added products that they can purchase directly from the farmer, a spokesperson said.

This meeting will give producers the opportunity to connect with others in the area. The upcoming farmers market season will be discussed along with a possible spring event.

Ideas, questions, and suggestions for the expansion and promotion of market opportunities in the Greene County area for locally grown and produced foods are welcome. These possibilities could include a local foods directory, a community commercial kitchen, and various CSA models. Wholesale to schools, institutions, and supermarkets could also be topics of discussion. All ideas can be put on the table at this first meeting of 2016.
