Ram girls end season at 3-17 after loss to Roland-Story

The Greene County Ram girls basketball team ended their regular season with a 50-34 loss to the Roland-Story Norsemen in Story City Feb. 9. The finished at 3-17 for the season and 3-13 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.

The Rams were within one point early on, down 6-5, but R-S scored the next 10 points to go up 16-5 at the end of the first quarter. The Rams were plagued by turnovers in the first half, tallying 18 for the first half, and made just three of 13 shots. The Norsemen took 27 shots and made nine of them and committed just two turnovers in the first half. They were ahead 23-9 at halftime.

The third quarter was the Rams’ best. The took only six shots but made four of them, and they held the turnovers down to five for the quarter. The came to within eight points of R-S, with the score 29-21 late in the third quarter. The Rams scored 12 points in the third quarter to Roland-Story’s 10 points for a 33-21 score at the end of the quarter.

The Rams continued to play even up but couldn’t shrink the deficit. With 1:20 to play in the game a pair of Nicole Rohner free throws put the score ay 41-34, but the Norsemen scored nine points to finish the game. Of those, five were from the free throw line.

Roland-Story sophomore Jenna Clark, who averages 10.7 points per game, scored 20 points to lead all scorers.

For the Rams, junior Kenna Marquardt had a career-high game with 15 points, including two 3-point baskets. She averaged just 2.3 points per game.

Laurin Lyons scored seven, Rohner scored six, Hanna Promes sorced four and Taylor Wessling scored two.

The Rams made 10 of 30 shots from the floor, three of 10 from 3-point range. They were nine of 12 from the free throw line and finished the game with 26 turnovers. R-S made 18 of 48 from the floor, three of 18 from 3-point range, and 11 of 17 at the line. They committed 10 turnovers for the game.

Roland-Story is 10-11 overall and 9-7 in the HOIAC.

The Rams begin tournament play Saturday, Feb. 13, against Pocahontas Area in Pocahontas. The host team is ranked Number One in Class 3A and is undefeated this season.
