LIHEAP can help with winter heating bills

Applications are being accepted through April 30 at New Opportunities in Jefferson for the federally-funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

LIHEAP helps low income families and individuals pay their heating bills with a one-time payment for heating costs. The payment provides supplemental assistance based on several factors including household income, household size, dwelling type and type of heating in the home.

LIHEAP does not pay an entire winter’s heating costs but makes a one-time payment directly to a utility company to cover part of the cost. Additionally, utilities cannot be disconnected to a LIHEAP home during the winter months.

Income eligibility is based on a household’s gross income and must be at or below 175 percent of the federal poverty level. The income guidelines are available on the Iowa Department of Human Rights website.

Applications are available at New Opportunities, 1401 N. Elm St in Jefferson. For information or to make an appointment to apply call New Opportunities coordinator Teresa Lansman at 515-386-2719.
