Free health insurance enrollment assistance available

A health insurance navigator will be at the Jefferson public library Tuesday, Nov. 17, from noon to 5 pm to help Iowans enroll in health coverage on the marketplace at healthcare.gov or through Iowa Medicaid.

Licensed navigators can help you apply for coverage, review detailed information about health insurance plans, and determine your eligibility for cost savings.

Please bring current photo identification, Social Security numbers and birthdates of all members of the household, and your 2014 income tax return and/or recent pay stubs. To select the most appropriate plan for your needs, also bring a list of current medications and dosages and the names of your preferred healthcare providers.

Appointments are strongly encouraged, but are not required. Contact Carrie at 515-414-9166 or carrie.radloff@ppheartland.org. Many questions or concerns can be addressed in advance of or instead of an appointment. Information is also available at the federal helpline at 800-318-2596 (TTY: 855-889-4325) and at www.healthcare.gov.

Lower income Iowans qualify for free coverage through Medicaid; check eligibility and apply any time at dhsservices.iowa.gov. An individual earning less than $15,800/year should qualify; add $5,600 for each additional member of the household.

Marketplace health insurance open enrollment ends Jan. 31, 2016. Apply by Dec. 15, 2015, to have coverage begin on Jan. 1, 2016.

The “shared responsibility payment” for not having health insurance in 2016 will be the greater of $695 or 2.5 percent of your annual income above $10,000. The fine for 2015 is the greater of $325 or 2 percent of income more than $10,000.
