Courthouse 100 celebration begins Tuesday

Commemoration of the groundbreaking, 100 years ago

Groundbreaking promo 3A century ago–on Nov. 3, 1915–the first spadeful of earth was turned to begin construction of Greene County’s third courthouse, the majestic structure still used today.

Current day county supervisors will commemorate the groundbreaking Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 12:10 pm on the courthouse lawn in Jefferson. In 1915, Greene County’s five supervisors were all male.

Current supervisors, wearing hats reminiscent of 1915, are (from left) Mick Burkett, Tom Contner, Dawn Rudolph, John Muir and Guy Richardson.

Tuesday’s event marks the beginning of Courthouse 100, a celebration of the building’s centennial which will include observances to mark the May 15, 1916, laying of the cornerstone and its October 1917, completion and dedication.
