August a little cooler, much wetter than normal

August was cooler and wetter than usual in Jefferson according to the monthly compilation of weather data by volunteer weather observer John Beltz.

There were no days when the temperature reached 90 degrees. High for the month was 88 degrees on Aug. 3. There were 16 days when the temperature didn’t reach 80 degrees, and four days with the high temperature in the 60s. The average high temperature for the month was 78 degrees, compared to the normal average high of 83.5 degrees.

Low temperature for the month was 48 degrees on Aug. 26. The nighttime low was cooler than 60 degrees 16 nights in August. Average low temperature was 59.1 degrees, compared to the normal average low of 60.3 degrees.

Beltz’s rain gauge received a total of 6.95 inches of rain, compared to normal August precipitation of 3.84 inches. The three largest rainfalls were 1l62 inches on Aug. 23, 1.52 inches on Aug.. 29, and 1.21 inches on Aug. 19. Beltz recorded precipitation on 12 days in August.

Beltz’s records show a total of 2480 growing degree days since Jan. 1. Normal for Aug. 31 is 2838.
