Hazardous waste collection nets nearly three-quarters of a ton

Jefferson residents diverted 1,491 pounds of hazardous waste from landfills at the collection event held Aug. 15 at the Greene County Fairgrounds.

The collection netted 309 pounds of pesticides, 290 pounds of oil based paint, 248 pounds of used motor oil, 127 pounds of bases, 100 pounds of paint-related material, 92 pounds of aerosols, 88 pounds of antifreeze, 82 pounds of fuels, 55 pounds of fluorescent light bulbs, 39 pounds of acids, 33 pounds of lead-acid batteries, 24 pounds of small oil filters and one pound of mercury.

Fifty-four residents brought items to the collection, with an average of 27.61 pounds per vehicle.

The hazardous waste collection was conducted by Metro Park West Commmission.
