Raccoon River water quality, week ending May 2

Nitrate levels (nitrate plus nitrite, in situ) in the Raccoon River at Jefferson decreased steadily but slightly during the week that ended Saturday, May 2, from 19.0 (milligrams per liter as nitrogen) on April 27 to 18.4 mg/L on May 2.

Pending legal action initiated by the Des Moines Water Works against Buena Vista, Sac and Calhoun Counties (upstream of Greene County) have made nitrate levels in the Raccoon River a matter of interest to many.
