USDA funds to Scranton for storm sewer study

Scranton city officials were notified last week that the city was awarded a $23,000 USDA Rural Development Special Evaluation Assistance for Rural Communitities and Households (SEARCH) grant to evaluate the city’s storm water needs.

The city plans to contract with MSA Professional Services of Des Moines, an engineering firm, to conduct a preliminary engineering study that will look at ways to improve the city’s storm water system. The cost for the survey is estimated at $23,500 so the city will provide just $500 of the cost.

City officials are looking at improvements to help reduce flooding following heavy rains which can cause flooding throughout the community.

The USDA Rural Development SEARCH grant program assists qualifying rural communities with funds for feasibility studies, design assistance and/or technical assistance to address issues that may require construction, extension or improvements for better access to clean water, or the enhanced management of wastewater and storm sewer systems. ~The Scranton Journal
