Scranton council handles routine business

Squibb recommended for library job, Boyd announces retirement

ScrantonThe Scranton City Council addressed a mixed agenda of routine business at its Aug. 12 meeting.

A public hearing was scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 6 pm for a budget amendment.

The city street financial report for the 2013-14 budget year was approved.

Linda Hoyt gave the monthly library report. She commented on circulation, Friends of Library meeting, tractor ride, internet speed, computers, video purchases, building update and results of the search committee for a new library director. The search committee recommended Ashley Squibb for the director position but the trustees had not met to take an official vote on the hiring.

Jerry Boyd gave the monthly maintenance report. He discussed street work, patching, water samples, mowing and street sweeping. Boyd also informed the council of his plan to retire sometime in October of this year.

Mayor Rod Walker gave the monthly community center report. Items included dirt work, installation of a light pole, air conditioner repair and concrete work.

The council voted unanimously to renew the contract with Maguire Iron for water tower maintenance and to approve the new service contract at a cost of $1,400 per year for a   10-year period. Under the agreement, the tower will be serviced every two years.

A new copier lease agreement was approved with ACCESS Systems to provide a newer copier model.

In other business, the council discussed but took no action on: joining the National Flood Insurance Program; updating the town’s Comprehensive Planning and Zoning Ordinance; handicap parking and tree ordinance changes. The council also set dates for committee meetings.
