Carey resigns from P-C school board

Board to appoint new member

Paton-Churdan school board member Greg Carey announced his resignation from the board at its regular meeting Aug. 13. The resignation is effective on Sept. 12 or when a new board member is appointed, whichever is earlier.

Carey gave no explanation except that his family has decided to “do some things differently at home.” “I’ve enjoyed my time on the board and getting to know the district and how it works, but at this point it’s best for the district and my family if I step back and let someone else take the role,” Carey said.

He has served on the board since 2005.

Board president Steve Burrell said to Carey, “You’ve brought a lot to the board. We’ve had a lot of good conversation.”

The board must appoint a new member within 30 days or hold a special election. That person will serve the remaining three years of Carey’s four-year term. When Carey ran a year ago there were three candidates for two positions, his own and the seat of David Dumdei, who did not run for re-election. At Wednesday’s meeting, the board agreed to contact the third candidate (Libby Towers) as a possible appointee.

The board tentatively scheduled at special meeting Thursday, Sept. 4, at 6:30 pm to make the appointment.

In other action, the new board secretary Mitch Lewis took his oath of office. He is also the school’s business manager. The board approved the 2014-15 school calendar and renewed the athletics sharing agreement with Greene County Schools.

Discussion items included the maintenance policy with Specialty Underwriters for electrical repairs, and  rejoining the Iowa Association of School Boards after a hiatus of several years. The board will discuss priorities for the year at its regular September meeting.
