J-S board transitions to Greene County board

The Jefferson-Scranton board of education held its last regular meeting June 18, a brief meeting that segued into a Greene County board of education meeting. The J-S and East Greene boards are dissolved effective July 1 with the reorganization of the two smaller districts into the Greene County Community School District.

The reorganization was approved by voters in February 2013. All J-S board members were appointed to the new Greene County board. The Greene County board has been meeting since March 2013, gradually taking over decision-making for the new district.

The only business for the J-S board was to approve a motion transferring  all property including but not limited to  land, buildings, vehicles, equipment, supplies and documents to the Greene County Community School District effective July 1, 2014.

Board member David Ohrt, who was appointed to the board after the two districts began whole grade sharing but before the reorganization vote, thanked both the J-S and EG boards for their work. “I want to express gratitude to both boards and all the people involved in pulling this all together to make it a really smooth transition, and to acknowledge how long it took to reach this point. I just want to give kudos to those folks,” Ohrt said.

At the last regular meeting of the Jefferson-Scranton board of education were (from left) Mark Peters, Jeff Lamoureux, David Ohrt and Sam Harding. Teresa Hagen was absent from the meeting.
