Public hearing slated on Hardin Township hog expansion

The Greene County board of supervisors will hold a public hearing next Monday on a construction permit for a new hog confinement building in Hardin Township, section 22.

The application is filed by Jay and Justin Ostrander doing business as Greene Valley Inc. Greene Valley currently has two confinement buildings with a capacity of 4,800 hogs. The Ostranders seek to a permit for a third building with additional capacity of 2,480 hogs. The new building would be to the west of their current buildings.

The county board of supervisors on Monday examined the master matrix submitted by the Ostranders. The master matrix is a tool to evaluate a proposed confinement in regards to set backs, manure management plans, other environmental concerns, neighborhood relations, and more. A minimum of 440 points is required for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to consider a permit application. Greene Valley claimed 480 points; that total was not disputed by the supervisors.

The public hearing is set for April 21 at 9:30 am in the board room at the courthouse.
