The Greene County High School music department will host the Iowa High School Music Association 3A state solo and ensemble contest next Saturday, March 29.

Musicians from Greene County, Perry, Boone, Nevada, ADM, North Polk and Gilbert High Schools will perform solos and in ensembles of all sizes.

All Greene County High School band and choir students will perform. Band director Becky Greiner reports 50 instrumentalists are preparing solos and there are 12 ensembles in rehearsal.  Choir director Dave Heupel is working with 25 soloists and several ensembles.

Greiner and Heupel spend individual time with every soloist and with the ensembles, making the weeks leading up to the contest a prime time for one-on-one teaching.

The larger Greene County ensembles will perform on the following schedule: 8 am – brass choir; 8:20 – 11/12 percussion choir; 8:40 – 9/10 percussion choir; 1:20 pm – clarinet choir; 1:40 – saxophone choir; 3:10 – chamber choir; and 3:52 – madrigal choir.

The public is encouraged to attend. There is a small admission charge to offset costs incurred by the IHSMA.
